Tips to prevent swollen gums
Dental health is very essential in out day to day life. If a person does not practice proper dental hygiene, harmful bacteria may build up in the mouth forming plaque on the teeth. These bacteria cause the gums to become inflamed resulting to red, swollen or even bleeding gums. This is because it releases toxic substances that harms the gums and causes it to become infected. If taken for granted, this can lead to gingivitis or even teeth loss. To prevent swollen gums from happening, one must take these necessary steps.
The first and most important thing one must do is to have a daily routine of brushing and flossing. Brushing alone is not enough if one wants to avoid swollen gums from happening. Brushing on the teeth and tongue can still have some leftover food particles in between the teeth causing bacteria build up. These bacteria excrete harmful acids which dissolves the holes in the teeth causing cavities and irritating the gums. Acid irritation can cause swollen gums making it so sensitive and bleeds easily. Flossing your teeth can help remove these extra particles preventing any plaque from forming on the teeth. It is also advisable to use toothbrush that has soft bristles because some toothbrushes, if used to brush the teeth too hard, can irritate the gums and may lead to receding gums.
Using a good mouthwash after brushing and flossing is the next step in achieving good dental health. Rinsing does not only remove the debris taken out from flossing, it also chemically kills a lot of germs in the mouth. It is advisable to rinse the mouth for at least 30 seconds to allow the mouthwash to reach the spaces between the teeth thus washing the bacteria away. A good mouthwash can even kill a lot of bacteria that lives in the tongue.
Eating a well-balanced diet can also prevent swollen gums. A balanced diet includes plenty of Vitamin C and calcium; both have a great effect to dental health. Vitamin C helps reduce the periodontal pockets that harbor harmful bacteria that cause swollen gums. These can also keep any dental disease from progressing and alleviates the symptoms for swollen gums because of its anti-inflammatory properties.
Lastly, one must quit smoking because this can make the problem worst. Cigarettes and tobacco have nicotine and other smoke toxins and chemicals that can inflame the gum tissues. These toxins and chemicals have the capability to cut the amount of oxygen to these tissues causing inflammation. Once the symptoms are manifesting on the mouth, regular visits to the dentist is highly recommended so that the best solution to such condition is offered.
